People regularly ask me what I wear to the hives, which tools I use, where I found my veil, what books I recommend, and whose work has shaped my relationship with the bees.
Beekeeping Everything is a living collection of the equipment, reading, teachers, sanctuaries, and wider projects that I have found useful or meaningful. Some resources are practical. Some are ecological. Some are rooted in myth, animism, or the sacred traditions surrounding bees.
Together, they reflect the many layers of beekeeping as I understand it: a craft, a relationship, an ecological responsibility, and a way of learning how to listen.
A beekeeper beginning their journey with bees will need suitable protective clothing, a secure veil, gloves, a hive tool appropriate to the hive design, and a smoker. Always have safe protective clothing on hand. Safety is more important than looking cool in a skirt and flip flops. The ability to work with bees bare handed or in a t-shirt comes with time and learning to read the hive.
More important than accumulating equipment is learning how to observe.
Before opening the hive, watch the entrance. Notice the weather. Listen to the colony. Pay attention to the quality of movement around the hive and to what your own body is communicating.
A tool is useful when it helps us work with greater care. It becomes less useful when it replaces observation.
Bee suits, skirts, veils, gloves, hive tools, smokers, top-bar hives, and a few less ordinary additions to my beekeeping practice.
This is not a list of everything a beekeeper could possibly purchase. It is a collection of the things that have earned a place beside my own hives.
Beekeeping knowledge does not live in one book, method, teacher, or hive design.
Here you will find my favorite books alongside beekeepers, sanctuaries, educators, artists, conservation projects, and organizations whose work contributes something important to the wider conversation about bees.
You’ll also find some of my alumni from Tending the Sacred Hive Apprenticeship, and the work they continue to bring to the world.
